It is natural that the student body at Waubonsee is as diverse as the community that the college serves. There is no better example of this than Dylan Norton, this month’s Waubonsee Student Success: Featured Student.

Waubonsee has a structured way to think about disasters and prepare ourselves for the most likely emergencies and the ways to prevent, mitigate, respond and recover from these risks.

September is National Preparedness Month; an opportunity to assess and improve readiness for all manner of incidents. With the recent disasters of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma fresh in our minds, it can be easy to think that it is only necessary to prepare for the catastrophic events. Though it is important to consider those kinds of events, there are many other things to consider when examining personal and organizational readiness. At Waubonsee we regularly look closely at all of our systems of safety, prevention, and preparedness.

Waubonsee Community College serves a remarkably diverse community and that diversity is reflected in our student body, faculty, and staff. I know that many Waubonsee students and employees are concerned about how the recent announcement regarding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program might affect them, their families, their friends or their communities.

Two Waubonsee Community College adjunct faculty members have been selected as the 2017 Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Members. Nancy Emanuel, an English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor, and Mike Riebe, an Instructor of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), were both selected for their teaching excellence.

For his dedication and service, Waubonsee Community College has named Richard “Shorty” W. Dickson the 2017 Distinguished Contributor.
