We live on a planet covered in life, and the study of biodiversity is my primary interest. At Waubonsee Community College, I strive to enrich the student experience by helping them recognize the diversity they share Earth with, while simultaneously exploring why organisms do the things they do, live where they live, participate in ecosystems, etc.
Q&A with Dr. Thomas
How did you become interested in Biology?
I was introduced to a group of microscopic organisms (freshwater diatoms) as an undergraduate, and through a series of excellent course, research, work, and graduate school opportunities, I kept studying them!
Why should someone consider Biology?
We live in a world of biodiversity loss, and we need people to find the beauty in the world and share it with others so there is broad understanding that the world we live on should be protected.
How would you describe your teaching style and what can students expect in class with you?
Laid back with high expectations. We can simultaneously have a nice time in class and produce excellent work.
What should students know about studying Biology at Waubonsee?
Nothing is easy, but anything is possible. You can do it!
What do you like to do outside of work?
I like to fish, ride bikes, enjoy time with family, enjoy time outside.
