Waubonsee Receives $350K Grant to Help Students Launch Careers in Rising Water Sector

Waubonsee Community College has received a three-year $350,000 grant from the National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education Program. The grant will fund a project called “Waubonsee Water Ways: Building Pathways to Careers in the Water Sector.”

Waubonsee Staffer Named E.Kika De La Garza Fellow by U.S. Department of Agriculture

Waubonsee Community College Latinx Resource Manager Franklin Ortega-Palaguachi was recently recognized as one of 32 faculty and staff across the nation to join the largest 2024 Class of E. Kika De La Garza (EKDLG) Fellows of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Waubonsee Partners with Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois to Help Latinas Navigate the U.S. Education System

Waubonsee Community College, in partnership with the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois, will host Latinas Taking the Lead, a free learning series to help Latina women navigate the U.S. education and higher education systems. These sessions are open to the public and will take place on Thursdays, Aug. 29 through Sept. 26 from 5:30-8 p.m. at Waubonsee’s Aurora Downtown Campus, located at 18 S. River St. Sessions will be presented in Spanish, with free child care and snacks provided.

Waubonsee Students Showcase Excellence at SkillsUSA National Leadership Skills Conference

Following two rounds of rigorous local and state SkillsUSA Championship competitions, seven Waubonsee Community College students secured a coveted spot in the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference (NLSC) held in Atlanta, GA, on June 24-28, 2024. NLSC is a week-long celebration, the largest gathering of America’s future skilled workforce, and the ultimate recognition of excellence in career and technical education. The event brings together more than 16,000 spectators and participants.

The Dean’s List at Waubonsee Community College celebrates excellence among students who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average out of a possible 4.0 while enrolled in at least six semester credit hours. The Dean’s List honors the following students for the spring 2024 semester at the college:

Waubonsee Community College Launches New Venture Academy and Business Growth Academy in Spanish

Waubonsee Community College is excited to announce two inaugural initiatives aimed to support entrepreneurs and business owners in the community. In the fall of 2024, Waubonsee will debut the New Venture Academy, an entrepreneurship cohort, along with the first-ever Spanish-language cohort of the established Business Growth Academy (BGA) for seasoned business owners. The Spanish-language cohort will be called Academia de Negocios.

Dr. Sheela Vemu, Associate Professor of Biology, was recently honored as the state’s 2024 Outstanding Full-Time Faculty Member by the Illinois Community College Trustees Association (ICCTA). This award recognizes faculty who are the heart and soul of Illinois' educational institutions.
