According to a report from the Wisconsin Hope Lab in April 2018, 46 percent of students at community colleges are affected by housing insecurity and 12 percent identify as being homeless. Initial studies indicate that insecurity affecting a student’s basic needs also affects their likelihood of completion. Waubonsee Community College alumna, Moji Ayorinde, persevered to ensure that she and her children would not become defeated by this statistic.

Waubonsee Community College Earns Certificate of Achievement For Excellence in Financial Reporting
Waubonsee Community College has been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). The award was given for the college’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR).
The GFOA Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.

For People Facing Opioid Crisis, Help Is Available
On May 2, Waubonsee Community College had the honor of hosting United States Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams as he addressed a community forum convened by U.S. Congressman Randy Hultgren regarding the opioid crisis that is challenging America. While his presence is not an everyday occurrence in our community, it is striking that his comments focused on everyday occurrences for many throughout our community.
Daily throughout this land, thousands are wrestling with the challenge of living with drug and alcohol problems, not just with opioids but with other substances including prescription drugs, synthetic drugs, cocaine, marijuana, and alcohol. While his comments touched on many aspects of these challenges, there are two that make this crisis particularly difficult to resolve. One is the tendency to stereotype, the second is the influence of stigma.
