February is a month that acknowledges some very well-known observances and holidays. Black history month, American Heart Association month, the birthdays of Lincoln and Washington, and even Valentine’s Day. However, it is also CTE Month®, which celebrates the value of Career and Technical Education! Why is CTE something we should celebrate? Because CTE impacts us all every day!

The President’s List at Waubonsee Community College celebrates excellence among students who achieve a 4.0 grade-point average out of a possible 4.0 while enrolled in at least 6 semester credit hours.

The Waubonsee Community College Foundation invites community members to join the college for an evening of laughs and raising money for scholarships for Waubonsee students.

Many people look forward to February for a variety of reasons such as Valentine’s Day or the approaching end of winter. At Waubonsee Community College, we look forward to February as an opportunity to participate in Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month.

To help students prepare for the American College Testing (ACT) exam, Waubonsee Community College will offer test preparation courses.

The Illinois Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Waubonsee Community College is hosting a Business Growth Academy. This is an 8-week program designed to help businesses chart their growth path. It is based on the Kauffman Foundation’s award-winning FastTrac© curriculum.

Retired Waubonsee Community College board member, Richard C. Bodie, M.D., passed away on January 19. He served on the board from 1998 until he retired in April 2019.

Community colleges exist to provide educational opportunities for people. One of the newest such opportunities at Waubonsee Community College is a partnership with The Hartford, a leader in property and casualty insurance, group benefits and mutual funds.

Nominations are being accepted for Waubonsee Community College’s 2020 Distinguished Contributor and Distinguished Alumnus Awards. Nominations must be received by Friday, January 31 to be considered for this year. The awards will be presented to the recipients at the college’s commencement ceremonies on May 16.

The start of a year brings a sense of newness and opportunity that extends beyond just the turn of the calendar. Many of us have new year resolutions that we use as tools to help us enhance our lives in a variety of ways. We make plans that support our resolutions and do things like buy gym memberships and healthier groceries, make financial budgets, and create tools to help us stay organized.

Resolutions and plans do not have to begin in January, though. For Waubonsee, the Strategic Plan we launched last August serves as our resolution to be the top choice for learning in our community.
