Procedure for Entering the EMT - Basic Program

Students new to Waubonsee:

All students:

  • Students are encouraged to meet with the Academic Advising about course schedules and requirements. EMT-B courses have strict enrollment caps.
     
  • Registration eligibility requires English course placement. Official high school/college transcripts, SAT, or ACT scores may qualify. Or Placement Testing is available. Contact your advisor or Learning Assessment and Testing Services for details.
     
  • Students must be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma/GED to take the certification examinations for EMT-B. Faculty recommend that students be at least 17 ½ when EMT120 begins to ensure material is fresh for the exam.
     
  • Review the current EMT-Basic Student Handbook (PDF) to understand the course requirements and expectations.

Completing the EMT - Basic Certificate of Achievement

Requirements

Students must maintain a course grade of C and successfully complete all clinical requirements to complete the course and be eligible for certification.

To attend clinical experience, students must submit the following. Details will be provided via email and by course instructors:

  • COVID-19 vaccine is recommended to participate in the EMT course clinical component due to recommendations at each clinical facility.
  • 2-step TB skin test OR QuantiFERON TB Gold blood test
  • Illinois Background Check
  • Drug screen
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers

 

Program Costs

In addition to tuition and regular fees, the Emergency Medical Technician - Basic student has the following minimum fees and expenses:

Textbook $140 new / $75 rental
CPR/BLS Certification $80
IDPH Examination Fee $20
Stethoscope $15
Drug Screening $45
Shirt $20
Immunizations/TB Testing Per health care provider

Becoming Certified

Students who have completed EMT120 within the last two years or are currently nearing course completion may apply for the National Registry Exam for state certification. Current CPR-BLS credentials are required, as is successful completion of both the cognitive and psychomotor examinations. Examination fees are student responsibility.
