No appointment needed! Just come by one of our locations or our Zoom room during the open hours listed above, and you can meet with a tutor or academic coach! Drop-in is based on first come, first serve.
Do you want to meet with a tutor for a subject we don't offer? Or are you studying late into the night? Try Tutor.com, our 24/7 online tutoring service, available FREE to all students!
The Tutoring Center's current hours of operation are listed at the top of this webpage, and they are updated as changes occur.
What Should I Bring to My Tutoring or Coaching Session?
Any relevant materials that you think will help the tutor fully understand the assignment or your questions. The more information your tutor has, the better they can help you with your assignment. Examples of what to bring include the following:
Lecture Notes
Lecture Slides/Presentations
Textbooks
Assignments and Handouts
Graded tests and papers
Rubrics
Course syllabus
What Can a Tutor Help Me With?
Depending on the subject and assignment, tutors can help you with a wide variety of issues. They can help you with troublesome math problems, reviewing your essays, or working through misunderstandings of your assignments.
However, they cannot help with quizzes, exams, or tests of any kind. Nor will they do the homework for you. Instead, they will help guide you to the right answer and create a foundation for independent learning.
What Can an Academic Coach Help Me With?
Academic Coaches can help you understand yourself better as a student. They specialize in executive functioning skills, including time management, notetaking, study skills, and more. They are here to help you create a game plan for your success and then they motivate you to stick with it!
What If You Don't Have a Tutor for My Subject?
Waubonsee offers Tutor.com, an online 24/7 tutoring service to all its students, free of charge. Simply go to your Canvas page, select “Tutor.com Online Tutoring” from the left-hand bar, and you can find the course you need help with there. It will also provide you with a list of subjects they offer as well.
Can I Just Walk-In or Do I Need an Appointment?
The Tutoring Center has options for both walk-in and appointments. Appointments are based on subject and tutor availability and take place inperson or virtually between our open hours listed. There are also evening and weekend hours available for appointments. Walk-ins happen in-person and virtually, and occur during the posted open hours only.
About the Tutoring Center
Mission Statement
The mission of the Waubonsee Community College Tutoring Center is to empower students to be independent learners by providing them with the resources, skills, and abilities to do so, while adhering to the instructor’s curriculum. The Tutoring Center improves and changes the lives of students by nurturing independent growth, promoting a learner-centered approach, and creating a welcoming, engaging, and inclusive environment for all who wish to learn. The Tutoring Center achieves this mission through diverse types of course-related academic support, such as professional tutoring, academic coaching, peer-to-peer support, mentorship, and supplemental instruction.
Vision Statement
The Tutoring Center is committed to providing equitable and accessible academic support to ensure all students have the opportunity to achieve their academic goals. Through this support, students become active participants in their own academic success and the academic success of their peers. Learners engage in the material, and those who offer academic support are expected to be role models for academic excellence.
Tutoring Center Philosophy
The Tutoring Center cultivates a secure and safe, non-judgmental space where students feel welcomed and accepted. Academic Support staff upholds a commitment to uplift our students through the process of tutoring and coaching. We uphold the belief that all students are capable of learning and that the right support system gives students the potential to succeed. As learning the material can be tailored to the student’s needs, it is our responsibility to find the right approach to help a student succeed. These two ideas—inclusion and access—are at the heart of what we do. Every student has a right to feel safe, to feel accepted, to feel valued, and to feel like they have the opportunity to succeed. We accomplish this by providing resourceful learning techniques and strategies, offering empowering motivation, and by truly understanding that “meeting students where they’re at” expands to more than just an educational style, but to a holistic one as well. Our holistic hospitality takes shape in our interactions with our students and how we assist them in their success.
Course Navigator
If you have had an online, flex, or hybrid course, you may have been introduced to a course navigator. A Navigator is a direct link to help you connect to non-content questions and resources. The navigator will be embedded in your courses via Canvas and Zoom. They can assist you with connection to college resources, such as tutoring, academic coaching, and library services.
Navigators CANNOT assist you with instructional questions (please speak to your instructor for that), but they can help you be a successful student.
