I always look forward to the start of the fall semester. It’s the time of year that we are privileged to welcome students, gathered from a diversity of races, genders, ages and other demographics. What they all have in common is a dream. 

At the heart of the mission of colleges and universities is the desire to prepare students to shape the future and make a difference. We do what we do everyday because we truly believe education is the key that can unlock doors of greater possibilities for our students, our communities and for the world. 

When evaluating the value of a college education, or even a college campus itself, the discussion often turns to the down-to-earth, economic, dollars-and-cents metrics of jobs and careers. It’s a discussion that Waubonsee Community College faculty and staff, along with many of our colleagues in community colleges across the nation, love to have.We are all proud of the affordable, quality education we offer to help our students pursue their dreams and become contributing members of the local workforce.

This month marks the renewal of an annual American tradition unlike any other — the men's and women's collegiate basketball championship tournaments, known by many simply as March Madness. 

With a variety of offerings, programs and services, community colleges strive to meet all the educational needs of their local communities. One of the most well-known programs of institutions like Waubonsee is the transfer degree option for students looking to transfer to a four-year college or university. 

In January, attention turns to the new year and the wealth of challenges and opportunities it brings. 

The popular scene depicted in films, television shows and college marketing materials of the first weeks of college always seem to feature a green, vibrant campus complete with fall foliage. Students laugh and gather outside, maybe tossing a Frisbee or studying by a lake. That is a fairly accurate description of the start of fall classes at Waubonsee Community College and institutions throughout the nation. However, the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center paints a different picture for the one in four new college students who instead choose to begin their higher education journey in January. These new students are more likely to bundle up to build a snowman than play Frisbee, but no matter when you start your college education, the final destination is the same.
