Community Members, Alumni Invited to Celebrate Dr. Christine J. Sobek’s Retirement at Reception on Dec. 1
Community members and Waubonsee alumni are invited to celebrate the retirement of Dr. Christine J. Sobek, President of Waubonsee Community College, who is retiring after a remarkable 33 years of service to the college, more than 21 years as President, and a total of 44 years of service to Illinois community colleges. The celebration will take place on Thursday, December 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Academic and Professional Center on the Sugar Grove Campus. Attendees can come by any time to enjoy light refreshments, a live performance from Waubonsee’s Faculty Jazz Combo, and to congratulate Dr. Sobek personally.
Non-Traditional Adult Education Students Inspire Me
I have been an educator for over 22 years and have had the privilege to teach both children and adults. However, teaching Adult Education students at Waubonsee Community College for the past seven years has provided me a new and refreshing understanding and appreciation. It has opened my eyes to the vast realm of "nontraditional" learners, the challenges they face, and the inspiration they offer.

As an employee of Waubonsee Community College for the past 33 and a half years, I have witnessed the magnificent transformation that happens to our campuses during the autumn months. The beauty of this season can be found in observing our spectacular trees change colors. The crisp air gives a sense of renewal, hope, and anticipation for what lies ahead.

College is an important decision that we all consider at one point or another in our lives. Some of us decide to attend right out of high school, and others return when our lives present an opportunity to fit it into everyday life. I took both paths and enrolled in a private undergraduate program right out of high school. Two decades later, I returned to school for my master’s degree.
