This winter, Waubonsee Community College seeks volunteers willing to give some time and expertise to boost the local economy and help local working families get back the money to which they are entitled during the 2015 income tax filing season.
In January, Waubonsee and the Center for Economic Progress again will sponsor the free income tax return preparation assistance sessions through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
Waubonsee has partnered with the CEP for the past decade, operating a site in Aurora. In 2014, the volunteers at the Waubonsee VITA site processed 902 income tax returns, bringing almost $1.9 million in tax refunds home to the Waubonsee region.
Volunteers are sought for various roles in 2015, including as volunteer tax preparers and site assistants. Bilingual volunteers are strongly encouraged to register.
No previous tax preparation experience is required. Training will be held on various dates from Jan. 10 to Jan. 20 at Waubonsee’s downtown Aurora Campus, 18 S. River Street. Precise dates and number of training sessions required will vary by the role for which individuals volunteer.
Waubonsee’s Aurora VITA site will open Jan. 28, and will operate Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings until April 15 at the downtown Aurora Campus.
Those volunteering can also earn college credit through Waubonsee’s Accounting 245 course, VITA Program: Tax Procedure and Practice.
