Traffic signals at Waubonsee's North Entrance were activated Friday, April 25.

As Waubonsee Community College today marked the Illinois Department of Transportation’s activation of a new traffic signal at the north entrance to its Sugar Grove Campus, college leaders paused to remember two students who lost their lives in an accident at the location in 2010.

“While the completion of this project is a significant milestone, we continue to feel the loss of Brandon Utley and Ryan Sherrod,” said Waubonsee President Dr. Christine Sobek. “Our thoughts remain with their family and friends and we thank those who have expressed their ongoing support.”

Following the accident, an IDOT study of the intersection found a traffic signal was warranted. Waubonsee officials advocated for the new signal and worked together with IDOT to enhance safety at the college’s north entrance. A partnership of municipal, township, and county authorities, as well as Illinois elected officials, collaborated with Waubonsee to obtain funding and bring the project to completion. The college also maintained open communication with its neighbors who demonstrated patience and cooperation throughout the project.

“We remain committed to the safety of our entire college community and are thankful to have partnered with IDOT and many others, whose assistance and permission made this safety enhancement possible,” said Sobek.
