A Waubonsee Community College student will advance to the SkillsUSA National Skills Competition this summer after placing first in his category at the state competition earlier this month.
From April 3-5, six Waubonsee students competed in three automotive repair-related categories at the Illinois SkillsUSA state competition in Springfield.
They were accompanied by Andrew MacDonald, Assistant Professor of Automotive Body Repair at Waubonsee.
At the competition, Waubonsee student Jose Martinez Joya, of Carpentersville, placed first in the Automotive Refinishing category, earning an invitation to compete against other automotive refinishing students from across the country at the SkillsUSA National Skills Competition June 23-27 in Kansas City, Mo.
Waubonsee students Steven Richards, of Sugar Grove, and Dustin Von Eyser, of Marengo, placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in Automotive Refinishing.
Waubonsee student Daniel Dwyer, of Kaneville, placed third in Automotive Collision Repair. And in Automotive Service Technology, student Tyler Kovac, of Plainfield, placed sixth, and James Hill, of Sandwich, placed 12th.
