A new era will begin next spring as former Chiefs' player Brad Unger takes over baseball program.

Former Waubonsee Community College player Brad Unger has been named to succeed long-time Chiefs’ Head Baseball Coach Dave Randall. After 37 seasons and nearly 1,850 games at Waubonsee, Randall is relinquishing the reins of the program that he built into national prominence at the conclusion of this season. Randall is one of only three NJCAA Division III (non-scholarship) coaches to have more than 800 coaching victories. He has led the Chiefs to the NJCAA Division III World Series three times, including a third-place finish last spring. Randall will remain Waubonsee’s Athletic Manager, a position he has held since 1984.

In 2001 Unger was the Chiefs’ starting catcher, earning All-Skyway Conference honors that spring before representing Waubonsee in the Region IV All-Star Game. Currently the Head Varsity Baseball Coach at Hinckley-Big Rock High School, Unger guided the Royals to the Little Ten Conference title and the Regional Championship game last spring as the number one seed. Unger has coached the last 15 years in the Aurora American Legion League, guiding his teams to more than 200 wins and a league title in 2011. He has served on the league’s Board of Directors, oversees the league's annual fundraiser, and built and maintains the league’s website.

Unger played his freshman season at Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he earned the team’s Top Newcomer Award. He transferred to Waubonsee for his sophomore year to play for Randall’s Chiefs. The following summer Unger competed for International Athlete’s Team USA squad that traveled to Italy to play against professional teams in the Italian Games. Unger then moved on to Elmhurst College and was the Bluejays’ team captain the next two years. His senior year he was selected to the All-CCIW First Team, was tabbed an NCAA Division III Second Team All-American, and was named Elmhurst College’s Male Athlete of The Year.

Unger earned his associate degree from Waubonsee in 2001 and his bachelor's degree from Elmhurst College in 2003, majoring in marketing and business administration. He is currently completing his master's degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University in River Forest. The Plainfield resident is self-employed and owns the NewLife Companies.
