Waubonsee Community College will host a visiting artist, Ross Sawyers, on Feb. 11. During his visit, Sawyers will offer a free lecture about his art.
Currently an Associate Professor of Photography at Columbia College Chicago, Sawyers received a BFA in photography from the Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA in photography from the University of Washington.
Sawyers said his art is influenced by the experience of living in increasingly smaller spaces, in closer proximity to others in neighborhoods and housing developments.
To produce his art, he constructs models, then photographs them through his camera, enabling him to exaggerate his environmental observations.
“In my pictures I examine and exaggerate issues of privacy and community and scrutinize the ways the structures we call home affect us,” he said.
His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and he has completed multiple solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions.
The lecture is free and open to the public on Feb. 11 from 9 to 10 a.m. in the Arrowhead Gallery, located on the first floor of the Dickson Center on the Sugar Grove Campus, Route 47 at Waubonsee Drive.
