Fifty-eight Waubonsee Community College students were inducted into six academic honor societies at a ceremony at the Academic and Professional Center on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017.
The ceremony marked the academic accomplishments of the students and formally admitted them into honor societies that align with their academic pursuits. Students were inducted into the following societies: Alpha Beta Gamma, Alpha Sigma Lambda, National Adult Education, National Technical, Phi Theta Kappa and SALUTE.
Dr. Amy Powers, Associate Professor of History, was the guest speaker at the ceremony. She reminded the students of three elements of honor society membership.
“You have all excelled in your studies, distinguished yourselves as student leaders, and have shown a willingness to use your talents to serve others in your community… As members of a community college, service is always at the forefront of our minds and we are pleased that you have made a commitment to helping others reach their potential,” said Powers.
Scholarship and service were themes brought up throughout the ceremony by other speakers, as well.
“Admittance into one or more of these honor societies indicates that students are making a commitment to continue pursuing academic excellence and engaging in educational activities that, at the heart, have the values of service, scholarship, and fellowship,” said Dr. Scott Peska, Dean for Students.
In addition to the 58 students who participated in the ceremony, an additional 120 students were admitted into these academic societies but chose not to participate in the ceremony. Waubonsee has 11 chapters of honor societies and hosts two induction ceremonies each academic year.
