¡Bienvenidos! Welcome

Waubonsee Community College Latinx Resource Center

Waubonsee's Latinx Resource Center (LRC) is an identity-based center that provides resources, support services, and educational experiences to support students' academic and social success. We offer all students a place to belong and to learn more about Latinx culturas, “cultures” herencias, “heritage” y tradiciones and “traditions.”

Our Programs and Staff

From the mentoring of current students, to helping families understand college and its many benefits, we offer a few signature programs. Learn more about those and/or our staff members!

Hispanic Serving Institute

As defined by the Department of Education, HSIs have 25% or more undergraduate Hispanic student full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment as well as high concentrations of students with financial need. Waubonsee is proud to be one of 600 HSIs across the nation, with a student population that was more than 30% Latinx in fall 2022.

The true spirit of being an HSI goes beyond enrollment numbers; it is reflected in practice. It involves intentionally designing support models and providing resources that empower Latinx students, employees, and the broader community.  Many of these resources are available through the Latinx Resource Center, which is funded by a Title V grant.

A welcoming and inclusive spirit is found throughout the college, as we continue to improve on serving Latinx learners holistically and strive to demonstrate HSI excellence.  This builds on the Servingness framework developed by scholar Dr. Gina Ann Garcia in that servingness is rooted in increased outcomes and that organizational culture is reflective of this institutional identity.

We understand both the importance and complexity of personal identity and the words used to describe it. We respect people’s freedom to identify as Hispanic, Latino, Latina, Chicanx, Latinx, Latine, and numerous other subpopulations that fall under the Latinx label, or more directly with their ethnic/cultural identity and/or their or their ancestors’ country of origin. But when naming our center, WCC students and employees advocated for the use of Latinx to be inclusive of various gender identities and heritages.
