A former Waubonsee Community College student received the Illinois Community College Trustees Association (ICCTA) Pacesetter Award.
Caroline Amelse studied science at Waubonsee in 2009-2010. She overcame the challenges of being in an abusive relationship and went on to earn two bachelor’s degrees and now works as a geologist.
“The story of Caroline Amelse demonstrates the power of education to change lives,” said Fritz Larsen, president of the ICCTA, at the awards ceremony.
The ICCTA Pacesetter Award recognizes the accomplishments of people who recently attended Illinois’ community colleges. Winners are chosen based on several criteria, including overcoming life’s obstacles; demonstrated promise and distinction in career; and humanitarian service that has proven greatly beneficial to society, among others. The award was presented on Friday, June 7.
“Caroline, you are truly an inspiration,” said Larsen when presenting the award.
