Note Taking Accommodation

Note taking as an accommodation provides access to information presented in class. A note taking accommodation can be provided to students in more than one way.

Examples of note taking accommodation

Receive notes and/or materials from instructor
Receive a copy of notes from a peer notetaker
Use of a laptop or mobile device to take notes
Take photographs of material presented during class
Audio record information presented in class *

Notify your instructor(s)

Indicate that you are working with the Access Center
Provide your instructor(s) with a copy of your current VISA³
Discuss how note taking applies in the course & how a note taking accommodation can be achieved
Determine a plan for your note taking accommodation
As needed ask instructor(s) to assist you with finding a peer note taker

ANSWER: Communicate with your instructor as soon as you know you would like an accommodation.

QUESTION: How do I communicate with my instructor to ask for an accommodation?
ANSWER: Communicate with your instructor before or after class, during their office hours, through email, by telephone, through Canvas.

QUESTION: What should I do if my peer note taker is not providing the notes in a timely manner or they are providing notes that don’t accommodate my needs?
ANSWER: Communicate with your instructor(s) and/or the Access Center to determine another method to receive the accommodation.

QUESTION: What is a peer notetaker?
ANSWER: A peer notetaker is a student enrolled in the same class who takes notes and makes them available to the student receiving the accommodation.

QUESTION: What do I need to do once I have a peer notetaker?
ANSWER: Communicate with the peer notetaker to determine how you will get the notes, exchange contact information and get a Notetaker Information Sheet from the Access Center.

QUESTION: How do I get the notes from the peer notetaker?
ANSWER: Take photographs, scan or make a copy of the notes.
