Students from several Waubonsee Community College Career and Technical Education (CTE) Programs recently earned recognition at the annual Illinois SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference.

The recognized students are:

  • Liam Richardson received 1st Place in Automotive Services Technology and will compete in the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, in June. Richardson is studying Automotive Technology at Waubonsee.
  • Angel Pino received 2nd Place in Automotive Refinishing Technology. Pino is studying Auto Body Repair at Waubonsee.

The event was held in Peoria from April 28-30. SkillsUSA is a state and national membership association serving middle school, high school, and college students preparing for careers in trade, technical, and skilled service occupations. This competition shows how prepared students are to enter the field and how well they compare to others in training programs.

To qualify for SkillsUSA, students must pass a written test covering eight Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification areas. In addition, they must score in the top twentieth percentile across the state.

“We had seven qualifying Waubonsee students participate in SkillsUSA this year. Each worked very hard to prepare and participate in this event,” said Guy Tiberio, Associate Professor of Automotive Technology. “Winning this prestigious award will provide many scholarship and employment opportunities. Employers know that when they hire a student who has competed in SkillsUSA, they hire the best of the best,” said Tiberio.
