Each semester, Waubonsee Community College recognizes academic excellence by hosting a ceremony for students to be inducted into honor societies. This semesters Joint Honor Society Induction Ceremony was held on Feb. 25 in the Academic and Professional Center on the Sugar Grove Campus.

More than 200 students were inducted into 10 societies that span a wide variety of academic disciplines and interests. The importance and significance of the occasion were noted by the students involved.

“I am wholeheartedly honored to be invited to be part of these honor societies. This is an opportunity like no other,” said Samantha Brinley, who was inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda, National Technical Honor Society and Phi Theta Kappa.

Many students see membership in an honor society as a step in their larger goals.

“I’m excited to keep working towards and planning my future,” said Devin Couturier, who was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa.

Though a lofty goal in its own right, induction into an honor society is really a part of the longer academic journey that students are on. This point was made clear during the ceremony by Dr. Scott Peska, Dean for Students, as he gave closing remarks:

“…your admittance into these honor societies indicates that you are making a commitment to pursuing academic excellence and engaging in educational activities that, at the heart, have the values of service, scholarship and fellowship. Let your participation in these prestigious student organizations be an opportunity for you to hone your leadership and communication skills.”

Taj Kimbrough, who was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, appreciated the entire experience.

“I thought the ceremony was very professional and I am grateful to be inducted into Phi Theta Kappa and very honored.”
