Waubonsee Community College is offering a week’s worth of events on the college’s Sugar Grove Campus in celebration of Earth Day. All events are free and open to the community, and will take place on the college’s Sugar Grove Campus, located on Route 47 at Waubonsee Drive. Saturday, April 15

  • Campus Clean-Up: Kane County Forest Preserve and Sugar Grove Campus
    Help clear the woods of invasive species and pick up trash.
    9 a.m. to Noon - Meet in the parking lot near the entrance of the Gilman Trail

Monday, April 17

  • Photo Exhibit: 50 Years of Ecological Change on the Sugar Grove Campus Displayed all week in the Academic and Professional Center lobby
  • “Sustainable Landscaping Practices” presented by Kim Riebel, Sebert Landscape and “Converting Turf to Prairie” presented by Jodi Legieza, Bluestem Ecological Services
    11 a.m. - Student Center, Room 106
  • Earth Walk
    Enjoy nature and walk the one-mile designated route. Pick up a number at the check-in table at the start of the walk. Participants will receive an Earth Day planter.
    12:30 to 1:30 p.m. - Dickson Center main entrance

Tuesday, April 18

  • Early-bird Bird Walk led by Vernon Lavia, bird watcher
    Discover the many species of birds that are found on campus and its surrounding trails. Bring your own binoculars.

  • “The Climate Reality Project” Mavis Bates, Adjunct Professor, explains causes of climate change and its devastating effects.

  • Ground Water Study presented by Jerry Elliot
    Elliot’s team organized the National Ground Water Monitoring Network and he will discuss their findings.

  • Sustainability Student Fair

  • Trail and Habitat Walk led by Joe Zappia and Andrew Maltas, Waubonsee Grounds Department
    A light–to-moderate walk to experience the different habitats that exist within the campus borders.

  • Commemorative Tree Planting and Presentation
     Join us to celebrate Arbor Day and the end of Earth Week!
    Presentation by Spring Bluff Nursery and planting of a tree. Attendees will receive a small tree purchased from the Arbor Day Foundation.
