Through a variety of events and efforts, Waubonsee Community College plans to take part in the nation’s largest single day of volunteering, “Make a Difference Day,” on October 24.
Now in its 24th year, Make a Difference Day is considered to be the largest national day of community service. The basic mission of the nationwide event is to unite people on one day of service to make a difference in their communities.
Waubonsee Student Life and the Waubonsee Adult Literacy Project are both planning service projects to coincide with the event. For the second consecutive year, Waubonsee Student Life will hold a Day of Service, where a group of students, faculty and staff will rake leaves for the elderly or others who need extra help, or work on projects with area service agencies for the day. Student Life holds the Day of Service twice a year – once in fall and once in spring – and tries to coincide the fall event with the nationwide Make a Difference Day.
Also on Oct. 24, Waubonsee’s Adult Literacy Project will partner for the eighth consecutive year with the Aurora Public Library, Oswego Public Library District, Fox Valley United Way and Altrusa International of Fox Valley for a Conversation Café. The Conversation Café will give adults learning English an opportunity to practice their skills with other new English speakers. Participants will create holiday cards for the Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry. Stories and other activities will be provided during the event for children ages three to nine. Each participating adult and child will receive a free book, courtesy of Altrusa International of Fox Valley and the Waubonsee Adult Literacy Project.
