Waubonsee Community College was proud to celebrate First-Generation Student Week from Nov. 4-8, dedicated to recognizing the achievements and challenges faced by students who are the first in their families to attend college. With a series of events and celebrations, Waubonsee honored its first-generation students, along with first-generation faculty and staff.
On Tuesday, Nov. 5, students had the opportunity to hear from first-generation faculty members about their personal journeys and the challenges they overcame. The panel provided insight for current students as they navigate their own educational paths.
On Wednesday, Nov. 6, a campus-wide First-Generation Celebration was held alongside an Empowering First-Generation Workshop, designed to offer practical tools for academic and personal success to students.
Throughout the week, First-Generation students, staff, and faculty have been sharing their stories in the hopes of inspiring others to start or continue their educational journeys.
“Growing up, attending college was always my dream, but as a first-generation student, it felt overwhelming to navigate,” said Jasmine Sims, Senior Access Center Specialist. “Fortunately, Waubonsee’s staff and faculty guided me through the process, helping me understand how to succeed and transfer after completing my general education courses. I’m passionate about giving that same support to First-Gen students and all students, empowering them to pursue their dreams with confidence.”
“I am extremely proud to be a first-gen graduate,” said Melissa Morgan, Assistant Professor of Mathematics Developmental Education. “With the support of my family, I was able to achieve my dream of becoming a teacher. Now, I can help my students do the same!”
Anisa Landrum, a Waubonsee alum and Waubonsee’s Senior Student Technology Support Specialist, is currently working towards a bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University (NIU).
“Waubonsee has many different staff and faculty with different perspectives, advice, and opportunities,” Landrum said. “I started here as a student, made intentional connections, and worked my way up to better and more opportunities.”
