Chiefs secure share of ISCC with win over Moraine Valley.
In a similar scenario to what they had to do in 2011, Waubonsee Community College’s baseball team had to travel to Moraine Valley Community College to claim their share of the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) title. The Chiefs completed the final two innings of a suspended game against the Cyclones on Wednesday, April 23, winning 12-4 to grab a share of the title. In 2011 the Chiefs also had to travel to Moraine Valley to complete a suspended contest to the secure the conference trophy. Waubonsee (29-22) finished with a 10-4 league record to tie for first with the College of Lake County, a team they defeated twice the end of March. The lone non-scholarship baseball program in the ISCC, this is the third title in the last five years for Waubonsee. It is also the sixth conference crown under Head Coach Dave Randall’s direction and seventh overall (1974, 1984, 1988, 1998, 2010 and 2011) for the ‘underdog’ Chiefs.
The Chiefs put themselves into position to grab a share of the title with a thrilling 3-2 win over Oakton Community College on April 19. The Raiders won the first game of their doubleheader 6-1 while league-leading Prairie State College lost to Elgin Community College. That created a four-way tie for first place with the Chiefs, Raiders, Lake County and Prairie State all having four conference losses with one game to go.
Waubonsee’s Austin Blessing proceeded to limit Oakton to only two hits heading into the top of the seventh inning with the Chiefs clinging to a 2-1 lead. After the first two outs were recorded, Blessing had the Raiders down to their last strike twice before surrendering a game-tying single. The Chiefs’ Brandyn Stoneberg led off the bottom of the seventh with a line shot single to center. Pinch runner Gered Bales was then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jose Camacho. On the first pitch he saw, Sean Holas singled to left and a diving Bales slid under the tag at home plate to score the game-winning run. The victory assured the Chiefs of a potential share of the title with Lake County alone, as Prairie State dropped their second game to Elgin as well.
