We Need the Arts Now, More Than Ever

We need the arts now, more than ever. In this troubling time, as we isolate and maneuver through the pandemic, we have probably found ourselves listening to music, watching movies, reading books, or perusing museum websites all the time. We have turned to the arts for safety and security, maybe without even realizing it.

War and the Humanities

The lesson is, that like human nature itself, war is a complicated weave of good and bad, life and death, heroism and brutality.

War and Literature

Tolkien points out what many writers forget—that some wars are worth fighting to preserve freedom and that oppression must be conquered in order for peace to reign. It would be so much easier if we never had to leave our shires and become soldiers. However, those of us who are safe at home and protected by those who do join the battle are grateful, for to them we owe our support, our lives, and our freedom.

The Psychological Impact of War

Veterans are at a higher risk of suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than the general population, and it is the third most prevalent disability for veterans receiving compensation (Reisman, 2016).

Veterans Who Continued to Serve Their Country

While the nation owes a deep gratitude to the men and women that have served in the military, it is important to also recognize that for many veterans, their service did not cease once they took off their uniforms.

A Tale of Two Years

Every year at this time, we are putting the finishing touches on the college’s Annual Report to the Community...

The stories and information highlighted in the report share progress toward the goals of our Strategic Plan, provide fiscal year financial data, and most importantly celebrate individual and college successes. We hope that through these stories, we can help create and foster personal connections between you, our community members, and Waubonsee Community College, YOUR community college.

A Historian’s Reflections on Veterans Day

I have always thought that anecdotally many historians—especially male historians—first became fascinated with the study of the past through military history.
