Chiefs win overtime thriller to earn back-to-back ISCC crowns
Waubonsee Community College’s men’s soccer team captured the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) championship for the second straight year with a thrilling 5-4 overtime victory over McHenry County College. Luis Correa-Cabral’s second half ‘hat trick’ propelled the Chiefs to the title during a rain soaked match in Sugar Grove. Waubonsee, 13-4-0 overall on the season, finished 6-1-0 in ISCC action to earn the program’s fourth league crown in the last six seasons. Over those six years Coach Brett Suhayda’s teams have gone a combined 32-8-2 in ISCC matches.
Waubonsee struck first just four minutes into the match as Sergio Semental scored his third goal of the season with an assist from Alan Camarena. McHenry literally responded in mere seconds as the Scots’ Kendall Stork dribbled through four Chiefs’ defenders and beat keeper Devin Hernandez to tie the game only 10 seconds later. A steady and sometimes heavy rain then began to fall and created some sloppy conditions throughout the rest of the match. Waubonsee regained the lead in the 38th minute as Marcos Carrasco booked his fifth goal with an assist from Sesar Nieves. Once again the Scots responded shortly thereafter as Mauricio Villanueva tied the game less than two minutes later. McHenry then grabbed the lead as Stork again displayed superior skill, dribbling through the Chiefs’ defense and drilling a shot into the net only 50 seconds later.
Trailing 3-2 at the half, the Chiefs made some defensive adjustments and then tied the match in the 55th minute. Luis Correa-Cabral tallied his 15th goal of the season with an assist from Ricardo Sanchez as the see-saw affair continued. In the 62nd minute Stork scored his third unassisted goal of the day to put the Scots back in front 4-3. Not to be outdone, Correa-Cabral tied things up again in the 87th minute with his second goal of the match. Carrasco and Zo Khaliq were both credited with assists on the play as the game remained tied at the end of regulation.
A little over eight minutes into overtime the Chiefs got a corner kick from the left side of the field. Off a short hop Reuel Erastus-Obilo tapped the ball toward the right side of the goal where Correa-Cabral drilled a shot past the Scots’ keeper to set off a jubilant celebration. For the match the Chiefs outshot the Scots 18-9 overall. Hernandez was credited with three saves, while Christopher Rubio registered four saves in the net the second half for Waubonsee.
Waubonsee is next in action on Friday, October 13 when they travel to Chicago to square off against Truman College at 4:00 p.m. CDT. The Chiefs are also set to play Aurora University’s Junior Varsity next Tuesday, October 17 at the brand new Spartan Athletic Park. The match, originally a home game for the Chiefs, is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. CDT on Aurora’s turf field.
