Celebrating the Power of Education to Change Lives
Over the years, I have spoken and written frequently about “the power of education to change lives.” My belief in the power of education to change lives was instilled in me early in life by my parents, who were both fortunate to earn college degrees. This belief motivated me to pursue a career in higher education, specifically in the community college setting. And it has been so rewarding to personally witness the power of education to change the lives of our students, employees, and community members.

When I was eight years old, I wanted to be a veterinarian. That interest pivoted toward a different dream of becoming a muralist with my own studio and the opportunity to work with my hands and create something beautiful on bare walls. That desire waned as I started to discern how my love of reading, writing, and communicating might translate to a career.
Waubonsee to Host Free Music Concerts in December
Waubonsee Community College will host several musical concerts in December. The concerts will feature traditional holiday music and a variety of different musical styles and performing groups. All concerts are free and open to the public.
Waubonsee and Northeastern Illinois Sign Admissions Agreement to Benefit Students
Waubonsee Community College and Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) recently signed a Guaranteed Admissions Agreement. Under the agreement, Waubonsee students who sign up for the program and meet NEIU’s eligibility requirements will be guaranteed acceptance to the university, along with having the application fee waived.

Waubonsee Community College Student Trustee Juan Chiu, of Aurora, was recently named the Illinois Community College 2022 Student Laureate by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois.

The cumulative age gap between the Garcia siblings spans over 10 years, but their love for Waubonsee Community College and the game of soccer is the same. Danni Garcia-Havens, Hayley Garcia, and Chaz Garcia, of Maple Park, consider Waubonsee a gateway to education, where they each found a supportive place to navigate college and explore direct career paths. And Waubonsee continues to unite the Garcia family over a game they once played as student-athletes.
Non-Traditional Adult Education Students Inspire Me
I have been an educator for over 22 years and have had the privilege to teach both children and adults. However, teaching Adult Education students at Waubonsee Community College for the past seven years has provided me a new and refreshing understanding and appreciation. It has opened my eyes to the vast realm of "nontraditional" learners, the challenges they face, and the inspiration they offer.
