If you read any national articles about higher education, you’re likely to find the phrase “student success” used in almost every paragraph. But what those articles don’t often tell you is what they mean by student success – do they mean degree and certificate completion, meeting a personal or professional goal, or gaining a new skill? When you ask students how to define success, you might get answers that range from “I want to get an A in that class” to “I need to take three classes to be eligible for a promotion at work” or “I’m planning on pursing a medical degree and I need to complete my associate degree in order to transfer to a four-year school.” At Waubonsee Community College, we are committed to helping each of those students be successful. This year, Waubonsee is launching the Connect4Success program to help even more students define what success means to them and meet their personal goals.

With Earth Day approaching, it’s a good time to think about what it means to be green. There are many ways that we can ensure our own homes are contributing to a healthier, more sustainable environment.

Yes, winter has returned. No one can change the weather, but with proper preparation many common problems associated with winter driving can be overcome. Now is the time to be thinking about how to prepare our vehicles for all that potential cold and snow.

As the to-do list season kicks off this month with holiday preparations and festivities, it’s no wonder that a less celebratory emotion tends to surface for many this time of year - anxiety. In spite of fun and memorable times with family and friends, the seasonal increase in social activity and sharing of life statuses can amplify the pressure to at least appear to have one’s personal and professional life in order. 

This year, Waubonsee Community College is joining the rest of the country in celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which was signed into law July 26, 1990. Our celebratory event – to take place later this month – will inspire us all to reflect on Waubonsee’s proud history of a commitment to accessibility and reaffirm our united, all-inclusive approach.

At Waubonsee Community College, our vision statement says that our success is defined by the dreams we help shape, the opportunities we help design and the futures we help create. This year, that vision is carried out in the form of a class tailored to give new students the tools they need to succeed on campus and beyond.

Many employers in the Waubonsee Community College district rely on temporary workers to augment their workforce. In fact, with 17,000 openings this year, Waubonsee’s region is one of the state’s largest in terms of temporary workers.
