Waubonsee’s Computer Aided Design and Drafting Program Boasts Strong Ties to Local Industry Partners
Waubonsee Community College recognized its Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CAD) Program at its December board meeting due to its strong connections with local industry partners, like Fermilab, Entrust Solutions Group, Arco Murray, and Sterling Engineering.
Embracing Diversity in STEM
At the beginning of each semester, I begin my biology classes at Waubonsee by sharing a borrowed slogan from the Local Chicago Council on Science and Technology. "Science is for everyone." I do this because this idea perfectly highlights the importance of diversifying the future STEM workforce of America. It also creates a welcoming space for those curious about STEM but discouraged because they have not seen representation in the field.
Meeting the Mission
As an automotive professor, I always believed education in a community college is a place for growth for people of all ages and levels. It is a place with a positive atmosphere where one can grow academically and socially.
Preparing Our Future Workforce Through CTE
Over the years, data has shown that the demand for skilled workers in various industries is ever increasing. How do we, as an educational institution, fill the employment gaps that exist in our region? Community colleges are the beginning of a pathway.
Shattering Barriers and Overcoming Textbook Affordability
It's the first day of class, and the professor is going over the syllabus, expectations, and strategies to pass the course. He asks us to take out our course textbook. I could feel an overwhelming amount of shame set in as I sank into my chair. Even if I tried, I know I wouldn't be able to come up with enough money for it before the semester ends. The assignment is due next week. I look over my shoulder and ask someone if I can make a copy of their book. I'm already falling behind.
Serving College Students In Unprecedented Times
Unprecedented. I feel like almost everything I read anymore has this word somewhere in the first sentence. It’s true. These are unprecedented times for all of us. At Waubonsee Community College we’re very aware of the struggle, not just for us as employees, but especially for our students. In Student Development we are working hard to make sure we can maintain the services students need and want to be successful.
Studying Humanities Today
Why do we explore the humanities as an intersection of the arts (visual, performing, applied, and literary), with philosophy, culture, and history? Why do we combine these subjects, compare them, and contrast them, all in a single course?
Because we are trying to investigate some of the most important questions humankind has asked; and then, determine how we have communicated these answers both through time.
Serving on a Chamber of Commerce
Waubonsee Community College is represented on 13 different chambers of commerce throughout Kane and Kendall counties. Having served on the Elburn chamber for the last four years as a representative for Waubonsee, I have learned the value these organizations offer our communities.
Waubonsee's Renovated Aurora Fox Valley Campus Debuts to Students and Public
A full-service campus with a focus on health care was what Waubonsee Community College leaders had in mind when they committed to renovating their campus located at 2060 Ogden Avenue in Aurora. The college is inviting the public to tour the updated facilities during an event on Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. In addition to tours, the event will offer family-friendly activities.
Encouraging Women in STEM
Why is it important to get more women into Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)? Many reasons! According to the U.S. Census Bureau, women are now earning a larger proportion of college degrees than men, yet they make up only 26 percent of the STEM workforce. STEM jobs are generally well-paying jobs, and research shows that when women in a society are financially independent and stable, the society as a whole does better.
