The month of August often signals a new beginning, like the refreshing “reset button” feeling a new year can bring. It marks the start of a new academic year, presenting an opportunity to discover new interests, strive for personal or career goals, and expand one's mind and perspective. Our fall enrollment is thriving and growing, with enthusiastic students, faculty, staff, and community members eager to engage, learn, and establish meaningful connections. This is a truly thrilling time.

College can often be overwhelming, given all the processes and information students need to navigate to succeed. Too often, students feel like they’re experiencing information overload as they try to enroll, pay for, and complete their coursework. At times, students struggle to identify where to go for help or understand when to ask for help to succeed. On top of it all, students have a lot more on their plates than just classes; they juggle responsibilities at home, work, and relationships, to name a few. Imagine trying to find a place where you feel a sense of connection and belonging when you are trying to balance all of this? I believe that is where advising can be used as a tool for creating student success and belonging. 

The Waubonsee Community College Foundation recently welcomed a new member to the board of directors, Wamecca Rodriguez of Yorkville. 

The President’s List at Waubonsee Community College celebrates excellence among students who achieve a 4.0 grade-point average out of a possible 4.0 while enrolled in at least six semester credit hours. 

The Dean’s List at Waubonsee Community College celebrates excellence among students who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average out of a possible 4.0 while enrolled in at least six semester credit hours. 

In March 2020, the world changed, and so did my teaching. The Association for College and University Educators (ACUE) launched its first course, Effective Teaching Practices, in July 2019 and when I was included in the first, little did I know the impact it would have on my future teaching career. 

Waubonsee Community College has announced the 2023 Support Staff Awards for Excellence. Awards were presented in each of three categories: Innovation and Creativity, Service and Quality, and Diversity and Inclusion. 

Attending college can expand one's life opportunities and allow future generations to break negative cycles. While it may not be the sole solution for overcoming generational disadvantages, it enhances earning potential and opens doors to a better quality of life. 

Waubonsee alumna Cheyanne Lowery, of Newark, has been gifted with a natural talent of artistic roller-skating since the age of eight. Her unwavering commitment to the sport has now paid off in an extraordinary way. 

Mary Baccheschi, Executive Administrative Coordinator to the President/Clerk of the Board, of Sycamore, was recognized for her exemplary professional service to an Illinois community college board by the Illinois Community College Trustees Association (ICCTA) at the June 2 ICCTA Awards Banquet in Normal.
