Course Placement

To help you build your skills and be successful, Waubonsee places you into appropriate English and math courses based on your abilities. All new full-time students need to go through the course placement process. Part-time students only need to complete the process if enrolling in an English or math course.

Class placement is determined by:

ACT Scores

If you have taken the ACT in the past 24 months, your scores can be used to determine your course placement at Waubonsee. ACT scores needed to place into college-level English or math courses are as follow:

  • ACT English score 20 or higher
  • ACT mathematics score 22 or higher
  • ACT reading score 22 or higher

Prior to enrollment, you may bring a copy of your ACT score report to Admissions and be issued a temporary “permit” to enroll in the eligible English, math or reading course. Official documentation of your ACT scores must be received by Registration and Records before the first day of class or you will be administratively withdrawn from the course. Visit the ACT Web site for further information on requesting test scores. Test scores must be valid at the time of registration.

Placement Testing at Waubonsee

Testing is available on a walk-in basis, space permitting, at the Sugar Grove and Aurora locations of the Center for Learning Assessment. The full battery of placement tests takes approximately two hours to complete. Plan to arrive at least two hours before closing so that you are permitted to begin testing. If you earned a “C” or better in high school geometry and have your high school transcript on file with Waubonsee’s Registration and Records, you will not be required to take the geometry placement test.

Placement testing is available on a limited basis by appointment only during midterm or the week before and the week of finals, each fall and spring semester. You may schedule an appointment by calling (630) 466-7900, extension 5700. Be sure to bring a photo ID and have your X-number handy. Learn more about Placement Testing at Waubonsee.

Placement Testing at Another College

If you have completed placement testing at another college or university within the last 24 months, you may request a review of your testing for placement purposes at Waubonsee. Submit a request for an Alternate Placement Testing Review, an official copy of your test results and contact information for the prior college or university to the Learning Assessment Department Coordinator. Eligible test scores are valid for 24 months from the date of testing. Test scores must be valid at the time of registration.

Prior Coursework

If you have successfully completed college-level coursework in the areas of math and/or English, schedule an appointment with the Counseling Center for transcript evaluation. Official transcripts must be received by Registration and Records before the first day of class or you will be administratively withdrawn from the course.

High School Geometry

If you have completed a high school geometry course with a grade of C or better, you will not be required to take geometry placement testing. Your high school transcript must be on file in Registration and Records for this option to be in effect.
